Christmas Team Trivia

By · Comments (0)

yes, I ran out of chars.  Sorry about that.  amanda, gram said you took great care of her kitchen chair on Monday night and Merry Christmas to you.

So yes, it was a Packed House for the Christmas version of Team Trivia.  Deke had a table full of goodies and LOTS of people walked out with cash/toys/prizes!!

On any big prize evening, and this was a BIG prize evening ($500 in CASH), things start off with me picking names from the barrel.  If your name is chosen and you are PRESENT (ahem, Shawn Collier, Joe Garrison and Mary Lynn McGinn), you come down to face the dreaded “Fact or Crap DEMON”.

You are given a statement.  perhaps something like “Adolph Hitler entered into the academy of fine arts in Vienna”.  is it a Fact, or is it Crap?  Answer correctly and you have earned a place in “contestant’s row”.

these guys defeated the Demon:

  • Tom Hinkle
  • Tony Matt
  • Jared Troutman
  • Andy Makara
  • Jason Burgess
  • Tanney
  • Nick Gober
  • Bill Kurtek

The first challenge that faced our contestants was to correctly identify the flavors of  9 high quality Gerber baby foods. :)

apparently there’s a good reason babies spit this stuff out.  carrots, split pea, banana, chicken must all taste better before they go through the blender.

After the herd was whittled down to Four, they faced the next challenge – the dreaded Oven Mitt and candy bar game.  Players put on oven mitts, and then were charged with the task of unwrapping a box, that contained a box that they had to unwrap, which, oddly enough, contained another box that was also wrapped.  and, once you got that far, there was a candy bar, which was wrapped.

Get down to the candy bar and take a bite of it before your fellow competitors, and you advance to the finals.  It’s that easy!

and now that the hard part was behind them, the two finalists were given the chance to take the reigns of the nerf machine gun, and gun down as many army soldiers as they could with a 20 round clip!

lucky for the army guys, the finalists decided that Christmas would be merrier if they each took home a piece of the $500 cash prize.  and so the only one who ended up getting whacked by rounds from the nerf gun was our own loveable Deke Rivers.  don’t cry for him, he deserved it.

so we had a PAIR of happy winners!

you may recognize the fellow on the left as not only a member of the beloved trivia team – the RZA, but also as the “Man Can Critic”.  yes, that’s right, this happy fellow . . . .

is the person behind the website – “Pounder of the Week“.  how’s that for a shameless holiday plug?

Oh YES – we DID indeed PLAY TEAM TRIVIA!!

all of the questions were based on the holidays, so extensive knowledge about the periodic table or the NFL was not going to help much on this particular evening!  despite the best efforts of probably 9 different trivia teams, the RZA came out on top!!

Team Trivia continues next Monday Night at 8pm.  the names of everyone playing will once again start going into the hat, as we move through the holidays towards the next big giveaway night!

Christmas Karaoke

By · Comments (0)

It is indeed a Long Way to the Top if You Want to Rock and Roll . . .

on Saturday night we had our Christmas version of Karaoke.  It was great to see a lot of new faces int he crowd, and more than a handful made it to the microphone for the first time.  We had some rousing AC/DC to help kick off the evening!

it wasn’t all hard rock though.  there were versions of everything from adele, to country (not garth brooks, the other guy), to the doors, poison, and some Cee Lo Green.  Add in some 867-5309 and a hard hitting version of Baby’s Got Back and you’ve got a party!

Dorko’s v Clover Hose

By · Comments (0)

it’s like the Steelers vs. the Ravens, or the Colts vs the Patriots.  or the Red Sox and the Yankees.

THIS SATURDAY NIGHT – Dorko’s takes on the Clover Hose in shuffleboard – at Dorko’s!

these two teams tied for first place last year – and they’re meeting for the first time this year in a match that will weigh heavily on the standings!  the action begins at 7 pm, so if you were thinking of catching a match this year, come on out Saturday!

so far the team has jumped out to a quick start, with a 14 – 4 record after the first two weeks of action against the Centralia Legion and the Eagles’ second team.

Darts Update

By · Comments (0)

we have a couple of updates to make on the darts front.

first, Sandy will be making sausage and bow ties for this Tuesday Night. and now that the important stuff (the food) is out of the way, we also have a first half winner from this Fall’s season.

with two weeks to go, there were three teams with an equal shot at the title.  that whittled down to two teams as we entered the final night of the first half. on that night, Team Ponytail stepped up and took the title.

First Half Champs – Team Ponytail!

  • Randy Kasenych
  • Josh Mall (yes, that Josh Mall, of “the Josh Mall Project” fame!)
  • Skinner
  • Cookie
  • Timmy Wargo

of course there are a lot more darts to be thrown before the season ends!

Out of Season Dart Throwing

We had a Two Man High Low Random Draw tournament recently.  i want to thank everyone for coming out and sharing the day with us.  we had 11 teams, an open kitchen, football on the tv’s, and darts in the air for the afternoon.  Good Times!

the team of “Paul Mall” wins the best name award.  that and a dollar will get you a shot of Blackberry.  still, it’s nice to win an award.

the event was “mixed”, and as always, the women in the contest shot well.

a round of cheers goes out to our Top 3 finishers, who showed patience (with me), endurance, and dart skills.  Congratulations to . . . .

Reedy and Doug

and to our Second Place Finishers, who were One Game away from the title.  it couldn’t have been a closer finish!

Nate and Little Fatty

and to our champs, who battled out of the One Loss Bracket to take the day!

Jason and Steve

and also a big Thanks to Doug and Jen for their help in setting up brackets, keeping the score, and everything else.  much appreciated!

The Grill Giveaway 2011

By · Comments (0)

Team Trivia doesn’t run in “seasons” per se.  but, it kindof runs in seasons.  For instance, every summer we collect names.  and, at the end of the summer, we give away a set of prizes.

Deke Rivers made his way to a signing session held by Vince Papale, an ex-Philadelphia Eagle.  he was kind enough to autograph some pieces with a specail note to Dorko’s Team Trivia players!

and we added a Man Cave Bud Light football tin to the mix.

contestants had to jump through the hoops.  figuratively.  there were several games in place, and at each turn the top players moved on.  player who were knocked out of the contest were awarded prizes.

the final game involved swinging the banana to whack the oranges into the hula hoop.  how can you make that one up?

in the end, Andrew was a better banana whacker than sinko.  and he walked away with the Summer’s Big Prize – the Gas Grill from Dorko’s!

Catching Up on Some Trivia

By · Comments (0)

yes, it is true.  the camera has been flashing, but no pictures have been making their way to the internet!  today, some of that will change.

let’s start with some of the Team Trivia Highlights from over the summer.  Deke added a new conTest at the end of the third round where teams have a chance to gain a couple of extra points by competing in mostly physical challenges.

they’ve included . . . .

“suck the ping pong ball against the straw and move it into the pitcher contest”

“build a house out of jumbo sized playing cards contest”

“flip the teabags onto the brim of your hat contest”

and the super fun “move the cookie from your forehead into your mouth just by wrinkling up your face contest”

here’s a picture of the winner of that one . . .

even after the dust settles on the challenges, we still have to return to the trivia action to determine a winner for the night.  the following folks have taken down Trivia Titles on various Mondays.  Congrats to all of them!

Dart Tournament this Weekend

By · Comments (0)

that’s right, fall is indeed upon us, and we will be lining up at the oche on saturday for a tournament!

specs . . .

2 Man Random Draw High/Low – so you don’t need to bring a partner, you don’t need to worry about Timmy and Joe shaving every last tenth of a point off their averages to fit in under the cap, and there won’t be any percentages math to deal with.

you just wander into the bar sometime between noon and 1pm, with an average. either you’ll be a “high guy”, or the other side of the coin. put names in a hat, pick’em, and away we go.

$10 a man to particpate.  two out of three falls per match, double elimination.

kitchen will be open. that means wings, burgers, onion rings, fries, etc.

it’s really that simple!

hope to see you there! :)

in other dart action, this upcoming tuesday marks the half way point in the season, with three out of four teams in striking distance of the first half championship.  should be a good one!
