i was just talking with Skinner about the dart happenings that will be taking place during the fall, and that includes a lineup of English Steel Tip tournaments. after all, we just ran a Last Man Standing for the Saturday Night survivor contest and pub darts are in the air again.
in case you didn’t know it, in the Steel Tip luck of the draw partner tournaments, Skinner has made a habit of drawing partners who are both lovely ladies, and deadly dart shooters. and after they throw a solid inning, he’s been known to yell “that’s my partner!”.
during our last Steel Tip event at Dorko’s I was lucky enough to pull a Skinner. and this afternoon I find out that my dart partner for that event was indeed a World Class Shooter, besting players from as far away as Spain while taking down several Women’s titles at the Chicago Bullshooter Soft Tip tournament . . .
you’ll also recognize the incomparable Mr. Mike Abboud who also had success at the tourney . . .
survivor is down to the nitty gritty now! there are four players, and two challenges remaining.
On Saturday players competed in an English Dart contest known as “Last Man Standing”. here’s how it works . . .
Each player is given three darts, and they throw them at the board. their score is tallied (and yes, trips count as trips. so if you hit a triple 10, that’s 30 points). we mark down the score by their name on the board, and the next player takes the line and throws their darts. eventually everyone has had their chance.
we look at the scores and the player(s) with the lowest score are removed from the competition. we line’em up and do it again, until finally all but one player are knocked out.
To start the night we had Skrully, Cookie, Larry and Aaron. Ray played one of his 72 immunities.
In the First Round - skrully failed to hit the dartboard, and so was low man with a zero.
the Second Round - saw Cookie land enough points to keep himself from being low man. despite a decent score, Larry was low man - and removed from the competition.
in the Final Round - Aaron threw a 60-something. that, is a solid score. Cookie would have to do very well if planned on getting immunity for the night. and, he did! by landing a triple 17, a single cork and another dart in the board he bested aaron’s score, and won immunity for himself!
and boy did that come in handy!
Aaron is going away on vacation, and was forced to save his immunity card for that weekend. that meant he was vulnerable this past Saturday night when the voting took place!
unfortunately for him, he is a strong contestant, and the tribe took advantage of this opportunity to remove him from the island!
now Aaron is moved into a place of power - he’ll have his say on who the winner will be by casting his vote at the final tribal council.
this Saturday we’ll trim the herd from four players to three. skrully and cookie have no immunity, so winning the challenge will be their key to staying in the game!
that’s right, this past Monday we celebrated the greatness that is ”the Champagne of Beers” - Miller High Life! that’s thanks to the Rizza, but more on that later!
The season has a taken a turn, and the warm air of summer is upon us. Team Trivia kicks off at 8pm, and I’d suggest getting there a little early so you can stake out your table.
two weeks ago Monday we had 8 different trivia teams battling for the top spot. action was tight, with two teams tied for the lead going into the final round. everyone else was within striking distance.
before the winners were announced, chickalet had his ticket chosen for a chance to open one of the Magic Envelopes. he hit the big time, finding a crisp $50 bill inside, making him perhaps the biggest winner of the night.
the team that won was none other than “The RZA” . . .
and that’s how we came to have Miller High Life on special Monday night. Taking turns between their favorite brews - Lord Chesterfield Ale, Yeungling Lager and Miller High Life, they chose the Champagne of Beers to be the dollar bottle special this time around.
this past Monday some different teams came out for Trivia. for the second week in a row one of them dedicated their team name to Chickalet, this time commenting on the things that delight his tastebuds.
after four rounds of questions, the teams of ”Vic’s Gay” and Bubba’s team were tied.
so, we had a sudden victory question . . .
“On this date, June 14th, the words “under God” were added to the Pledge of Allegiance. What YEAR did that take place?”
luckily the RZA weren’t involved, they knew the exact year. Our teams guessed in the early 1900’s. the actual date was 1954. and the team that came closer with their guess?
congrats to the ladies of Vic’s Gay on their trivia victory. Team Trivia night is certainly a good time for a Ladies Night Out!
Saturday night offered an interesting mix of conversations. the Immunity Challenge for the big Survivor Island contest was something that I reached back into the past to ressurect. I’n not really sure if the idea of throwing money at a wall and calling it a game is strictly a coal region pastime, or something that you’ll find in other areas as well.
i know that when i asked people if they pitched nickels, almost to a person, they said “we pitched quarters”. kids these days!
and almost all of the coin pitching action occured at school, in the bathrooms - away from the prying eyes of the nuns/teachers. so, in a nod to the only school bathroom based sport i can think of, we pitched nickels for Immunity Saturday.
The game is very simple.
players stand behind a line and toss coins at a wall.
they can hit the wall, or not hit the wall, it doesn’t matter.
once the coins stop, the closest coin to the wall wins.
winner gets both coins.
Aaron beat all comers on Saturday - and so he won immunity for the night. Cookie gave it a gallant effort, Skrully not so much.
The only player who was unable to make it in and sign in for the night was Lori. as a result, she’s this weeks’ person to move from the list of players to voting member of the Final Council.
well, that’s not only the chant that you’ll be hearing tonight when the Fly Guys take on the ‘Hawks on Versus at 8pm on the big screen tonight, it’s also the name of one of the teams from Monday Night Trivia this past week.
Trivia on Monday had a twist to it. Partly because it was the final hurrah of the Memorial Day Weekend which kicks off the summer, but also because it was the first edition of “80’s Trivia” where players knowledge of the pop culture of the 80’s was going to be a definite help.
plenty of new folks were out to compete, well, and some blasts from the past . . .
and they waded through questions such as . . .
Who was Ronald Regan’s attempted assassin?
What legendary rocker was WWF’s honkeytonk man famous for impersonating in the ring?
Which came first: band aid, farm aid, or live aid?
as the night wore on, the winners came out. first, we chose the winner from our “Golden Test Tube” contest. players had been finding ways to have their names placed in the lucky Miller Lite bucket. and Monday, we drew one of those names and awarded that person with free seats on our trip to Balitmore to see the Orioles take on the Mets in June.
big congrats go out to the lady who actually won the tickets . . .
and the men who are most happy about it!
to help everyone enjoy the evening even more thoroughly we were lucky enough to have the loveliest lady in all of sunny San Diego stop by and be our shooter girl for the evening, Mrs. Mutzy . . .
these guys were enjoying themselves - big 80’s buffs they are . . .
and every week we’ve had the Magic Envelope Pile - where one lucky player can get the chance to recieve the contents of one of ten envelopes. inside of one of the envelopes is a $50 bill. i think the last person to walk away with one of those was Joel. this week, prizes were certainly in the air as our lad from the RZA picked the right envelope, and walked aaway with a cool $50. here’s his smile to document the occassion . . .
but wait, let’s get back to the actual GAME. err, in a moment. one of the great things about Team Trivia is that it allows you to be creative with how you present yourselves on a Monday night. you can keep the same team name over and over and become known as a force in teh trivia world, like the RZA and the Jehova’s Witness Protection Program, or you can reinvent your team every week with a new name.
these guys get the name of the week award . . .
i don’t know which one of them works in a beauty parlor, but apparently it inspired the name of “She wanted a manicure, but I gave her a facial instead”.
when the dust of four intense round of trivia cleared, we still didn’t have a winner. and so we went into a “Sudden Victory” mode, where each team - and they were The RZA and Let’s Go Flyers - sent a representative to the stage to answer the tie breaking question.
During the 80’s Princess Dianna and Prince Charles were married. It was a really big to do. Give me the day, month, and year of the wedding.
the team who cames closest was . . . .
Let’s Go Flyers!
and they look a lot like last week’s champs as well . . .
more trivia action coming your way - and yes Tanney, that includes chicken sandwiches - Monday at 8pm!!!
our kids are going on to . . . . WORLD FINALS. and i’m gonna tell ya, the world is a very big place with LOTS of people in it. it’s like bigger than Shamokin and Sunbury combined!
Odyssey of the Mind® 2010 World Finals
Michigan State University
East Lansing, MI
May 26 - May 29
Students from around the world will compete in the 31st Odyssey of the Mind World Finals. This competition emphasizes creativity and teamwork. It has grown into such a huge event because OotM makes learning fun while giving kids the chance to explore their imaginations and express their creativity.
Millions of kids have been working hard all year perfecting their solutions to OotM problems and competing within their regions and states in order to advance to the 2010 World Finals. However, only the best of the best will make it to WF.
While the competition is fierce, there is also a feeling of camaraderie among competitors. Many students form life-long friendships that span the U.S. and the globe. Teams have the chance to learn about other cultures through a common goal . . . to be as creative as they can!
NASA will be sure to provide more exciting activities for participants.
Meeting people from different countries and cultures and making new friends worldwide.
Seeing OMER and Dr. Sam.
Having the satisfaction of participating in the highest level of OotM competition.
Experiencing the other fun-filled events at WF like the Creativity Festival, International Festival, Float and Banner Parade, Coaches Competition, Opening and Awards Ceremonies, and much more!
i’m not sure if Peter Laviolette mentioned this in any of his press conferences, but due to the overwhelming support that the Philadelphia Flyers received from the fans at Dorko’s, they were able to dig deep and defeat the Montreal Candiens in the Eastern Conference finals of the NHL.
the next round of fun starts Friday, and continues Monday Night on NBC. games 3 and 4 on Versus, at Dorko’s, in glorious Hi-Def on Wednesday and Friday. free slim jims baby! you just gotta believe!!
On Saturday Night we had our Survivor Island gathering. The player pool is getting thinner every week, and the only way to make sure you are not asked to leave the game is to have Immunity!
and so, we issued a very important Immunity Challenge on Saturday - the remote controlled toy race car event! we took a replica of a Camero, the new ones like in Transformers, and ran it around the track a couple of times.
everyone had some test runs, and then we ran time trials. players with the top two times in time trials went on to face each other for Immunity!!
in the end Aaron took down the title for the evening . . . .
tony matt was the only player to miss sign ups, and as a result he was voted off of the island. now, he has the power that comes to those who qualify to be on the final jury. we are down to an even half dozen players now.
the Fly Guys refuse to die, and we’ll be following their game on Tuesday Night on the big screen on Versus, with no juke box to interrupt the bad announcers. We’ll have a game time spread to pick on, and drink specials as well. Hopefully lots of “free slim jims!!”
Join us for the fun, and wear your Jersey or your Orange and Black!! get there early to get a seat next to this guy . . .
