January Trivia

Posted by: | Comments (0)

next Monday Night – chicken sandwiches!!

we didn’t get an interview with the winning team from Monday, but we did get a snapshot of our reigning champs . . .

in a Trivia Contest that Deke Rivers called “an epic battle of legendary proportions”, these fellows (and lady) came out on top!  the other winners of the night were the team of “We should get bonus points, we have Traci” who had their highest finish of the season!

Over the past week the title of “Trivia Champs” has been passed around, proving that it is indeed . . . “Anybody’s Game”.

Your Momma Joke Battle

Posted by: | Comments (0)

here are some clips from the “Your Momma Joke Battle”  that took place in the fall during TEAM TRIVIA.  Of course not every trivia night is as zany as this, but once in a while  . . . .

each team sent a brave contestant, who was tasked with out dueling their counterpart using their three best “your momma” jokes.  Round One pitted “Kyle vs RZA”.

in the opposite division we had Tanney pairing up against Shawn.

and the finals . . .

Christmas Team Trivia

Posted by: | Comments (0)

yes, I ran out of chars.  Sorry about that.  amanda, gram said you took great care of her kitchen chair on Monday night and Merry Christmas to you.

So yes, it was a Packed House for the Christmas version of Team Trivia.  Deke had a table full of goodies and LOTS of people walked out with cash/toys/prizes!!

On any big prize evening, and this was a BIG prize evening ($500 in CASH), things start off with me picking names from the barrel.  If your name is chosen and you are PRESENT (ahem, Shawn Collier, Joe Garrison and Mary Lynn McGinn), you come down to face the dreaded “Fact or Crap DEMON”.

You are given a statement.  perhaps something like “Adolph Hitler entered into the academy of fine arts in Vienna”.  is it a Fact, or is it Crap?  Answer correctly and you have earned a place in “contestant’s row”.

these guys defeated the Demon:

  • Tom Hinkle
  • Tony Matt
  • Jared Troutman
  • Andy Makara
  • Jason Burgess
  • Tanney
  • Nick Gober
  • Bill Kurtek

The first challenge that faced our contestants was to correctly identify the flavors of  9 high quality Gerber baby foods. :)

apparently there’s a good reason babies spit this stuff out.  carrots, split pea, banana, chicken must all taste better before they go through the blender.

After the herd was whittled down to Four, they faced the next challenge – the dreaded Oven Mitt and candy bar game.  Players put on oven mitts, and then were charged with the task of unwrapping a box, that contained a box that they had to unwrap, which, oddly enough, contained another box that was also wrapped.  and, once you got that far, there was a candy bar, which was wrapped.

Get down to the candy bar and take a bite of it before your fellow competitors, and you advance to the finals.  It’s that easy!

and now that the hard part was behind them, the two finalists were given the chance to take the reigns of the nerf machine gun, and gun down as many army soldiers as they could with a 20 round clip!

lucky for the army guys, the finalists decided that Christmas would be merrier if they each took home a piece of the $500 cash prize.  and so the only one who ended up getting whacked by rounds from the nerf gun was our own loveable Deke Rivers.  don’t cry for him, he deserved it.

so we had a PAIR of happy winners!

you may recognize the fellow on the left as not only a member of the beloved trivia team – the RZA, but also as the “Man Can Critic”.  yes, that’s right, this happy fellow . . . .

is the person behind the website – “Pounder of the Week“.  how’s that for a shameless holiday plug?

Oh YES – we DID indeed PLAY TEAM TRIVIA!!

all of the questions were based on the holidays, so extensive knowledge about the periodic table or the NFL was not going to help much on this particular evening!  despite the best efforts of probably 9 different trivia teams, the RZA came out on top!!

Team Trivia continues next Monday Night at 8pm.  the names of everyone playing will once again start going into the hat, as we move through the holidays towards the next big giveaway night!

trivia Nights have been packed lately, with plenty of teams and lots of action!

[photopress:xmas2010FrontRoom.jpg,full,pp_image]

we’ve even started the new “season”.  every time you play Team Trivia, you get your name in the barrel.  We’ll be setting up a special team trivia night for St. Patty’s Day where we will pull names from the barrel, and those players will compete for prize packages!

so, the more often you play, the more likely your name will be picked!  here are some picts from our Christmas version of Team Trivia.  one of the contests was opening a set of gift boxes while wearing oven mitts.  inside you’d find another gift box, and inside that i think there was a third gift box.  inside of that was a candy that you had to eat.  if it sounds hard, it might actually be harder.  especially if you have a room full of people cheering you on!

[photopress:muffinHandsExtraEffort.jpg,full,pp_image]

i think that night we had a 47 team tie!  first time in Dorko’s Trivia history!!

I know we had some relaxing moments enjoying the holiday :)

[photopress:elfinGoodTimes2010_1.jpg,full,pp_image]

from this Monday we have our NEW CHAMPIONS!!

[photopress:1_4_11TriviaChamps.jpg,full,pp_image]

and here they are cherishing the trophy, and their spot on the top of the heap of teams that competed!

[photopress:1_4_11PrizedPossession.jpg,full,pp_image]

next monday night at 8 pm we line up and do it again so feel free to stop on by and join in the fun, or just enjoy the atmosphere!!

Sports Trivia December 2010

Posted by: | Comments (0)

During the past week we ran the December version of sports trivia.  it was, per usual, a good time with some interesting sports conversation.  good to see that Curt Susnoski made it out for a Sports Trivia night!

We ran with three teams: The “Cliff Lee” crew, Million Dollar man and IRS, and the Mad Elf crew.

there were four rounds of questions, including some sound clips, and a few “identify the pictures”.

Players worked their way through questions such as . . .

  • Who has the most 40 point games in an NBA career?
  • How many active players are there on an NFL roster?
  • Who is teh top ranked golfer in the world?
  • Who holds the record for most yards rushing in a season for the red Tornadoes? (2 players – 15 game season and 12 game season)
  • How many college bowl games are there this year?
  • What is Ted Giannoulas better known as?
  • What was the texas Rangers MLB franchise formerly known as?  And a bonus point if you can name their last manager?

going into the final round two teams were within two points of each other.  and, the final round had 30 points up for grabs.

the big question of the evening was “Name the 14 college football players that amasses 5,000 yards rushing during their college career”.

In case you’re curious, they are . . .

  • ron dayne
  • ricky williams
  • tony dorsett
  • deangelo williams
  • charles white
  • travis prentice
  • cedric benson
  • ladainian tomlinson
  • hershel walker
  • archie griffin
  • avon cobourne
  • garrett wolfe
  • mike hart
  • darren lewis

when it was over, our team whose name was inspired by Cliff Lee’s wife stod at the top of the scoreboard.  Congrats on the win fellas!!

[photopress:sportsTriviaDec2010.jpg,full,pp_image]

parting tidbit:

“No matter how much you push the envelope, it’ll still be stationery.”

until Christmas Trivia.  Larry is already obsessing over the festivities for that night, but in the meantime, everyone will have a few more chances to get their names into the hat and be chosen to compete for prizes at Christmas Trivia.  any time you play team trivia, your name is entered – win, lose or draw.

speaking of winning, here are some picts capturing the moments of triumph these past two weeks!

Feeling Lucky, Punk?

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Well, do ya?

Then join us for the madness tonight as we unleash another edition of Team Trivia. Here’s the 411:

Menu

Limited number of Chicken Wings in the usual flavors:

  • Hot
  • BBQ
  • Mild
  • Hot BBQ
  • Hot Garlic – current top seller, fwiw
  • Mild Garlic
  • Sweet & Zippy
  • Hot Garlic with Parm – a twist on the dishwater sauce of October, less heavy than Whiz or Chedder, but cheesy none-the-less
  • Mild Garlic with parm – see above
  • Honey Mustard
  • Honey Garlic
  • Hot Garlic w/Honey – which is honey added to the hot garlic, not Hot added to the Honey Garlic, which would be a completely different beast
  • Lemon Pepper
  • Old Bay
  • Old Bay w/garlic
  • Plain
  • Creamy Parm
  • Garlic Parm – it’s not creamy
  • Creamy Parm w/Garlic

and then of course you can add a side of hot sauce for dipping, which can kick up any of these flavors.  sorry if i missed any :)

Wings will be available in plentiful numbers on THURSDAY NIGHTS after we celebrate Thanksgiving (the tavern is closed this Thursday, which is Thanksgiving, btw).  Come December 2nd you’ll be able to get any of those flavors, and probably more, starting at 6pm and ending at 10.  unless you’re stuck somewhere in a card game and call ahead of time.  then you might be able to get them until 10:30.

ROAST BEEF SANDWICHESin limited quanitity.  That’s 6 oz. of roasted beef (not store-bought, I roasted it) in an Aus Jus, with Provologne and Horsey Sauce (if you wish) on a Kaiser.

BURGERS – that are 6 oz. big, never been frozen, and can be dressed in a

  • California style (Lettuce, Tomato, Onion, Mayo)
  • the Mickey D’s style (swap out the Mayo for 1,000 Island)
  • the new Dorko’s “Big Bob’s Blazin Burger” Style – which is a nod to Schick and the excellent cuisine he serves up for the Sunday NFL fanatics.  That’s right, we’re open Sundays baby, for Six Packs, food, and general beer dinking-football watching purposes.  Anyway, it’s a Screamer Style sauce with a coating of chopped raw onion (if you’d like) and a kiss of butter.

TACOS – Dollar Tacos round out the night’s offerings from the kitchen.

More Important Stuff – ONE DOLLAR BOOZE offerings!!

There will be several chances to grab yourself a $1 shot, presented by an attractive young lady, held in a nearly-collectible test tube style container. Feel free to take advantage of it.

Also, Genny, Genny Lite and Keystone Light cans are all a buck a piece ALL DAY LONG! :)

Four shots and four beers, eight bucks?  What the Hell?  it’s like you’ve died and gone to Dorko’s!!

SUPER SECRET ANSWER TO ONE OF TONIGHT’S QUESTIONS – Clint Easwood.  it probably won’t pick you up any points, but I guarantee that one of the answers to one of tonight’s questions will be Clint Eastwood.

The WINTER TRIVIA QUEST – yes, I’ll be passing out the index cards.  remember, each time you play trivia your name goes on a card, and that card goes into the “big ol’ bucket of potential winners”.  And when we host our Christmas Trivia, we will pick players at random to compete in our “Reindeer Games” where you can win cash or prizes.  So you don’t have to field the world’s greatest trivia team to be a winner.

there’s Plenty of Fun for Everyone at Team Trivia!

Cheese Steaks and Trivia

Posted by: | Comments (0)

not yet.  that’s this UPCOMING Monday Night, as a bit of a tribute to the phighting phils as they put their effortss into this year’s MLB playoff run.  so, in case you were wondering what was going to be on the menu, now you know.

of course we have been gathering on Monday Nights, taking in some NFL action, munching on wings, buffalo chicken sandwiches, cheeseburgers and roast beef, and playing Team Trivia.  i’ll post some picts from recent weeks to prove it ;)

Last Monday teams worked their way through a series of questions that included an obligatory nod to the legend that is Clint Eastwood.

at the end of regulation, two teams were in a tie.  and so the guys in the back sent Bubba up to the mike to represent their team in sudden death vs the RZA.

The Question:  In what year was Malcom X assassinated?

what hung in the balance?  besides being crowned trivia champions for the night, each team had the chance to repeat one of the following scenes.  would the team formerly known as the cell phone mafia triumph as they had recently?

[photopress:disappearingBubba.jpg,full,pp_image]

or, would the RZA take their second title of the month?

and enjoy the fruits of their efforts, in the form of 12 oz cans of specially ordered beers, with cutting edge flavor . . .

Monday the RZA took the title.  Congrats Guys!!

i’m not sure if that means other teams will be stocking up on Frank Sinatra fans in order to cut into one of the RZA’s area of expertise, but I do know that Pabst Blue Ribbon will be making a comeback on Monday, on ice!!

over the past weeks both Temporary Relapse . . .

and Rad’s crew in the corner . . .

also took the evening.  so the competition has been exciting, with different teams proving themselves on different nights!  and the action continues this upcoming Monday!

Trivia Recaps

Posted by: | Comments (0)

yes, team trivia has been rolling along on Monday Nights.  i just haven’t been posting all the smiling faces flushed with the joy of Victory on a timely basis.  so, here’s some snapshots from the past few weeks, starting with the tieBreaker aptly titled “Don’t Even Guess 1978, you $%^#!”

CJ prevailed at this showdown, bringing the trophy and the glory of the evening to the table in the back where it could be divied up by the “Cell Phone Mafia”

the following week we had Big A back in the house, rockin the Hoosier Daddy T.  that’s the start of a good party!

As always, Prize Packages filled the air in between sets of trivia questions!

and when the dust settled, the crew in the back repeated as champs!

of course that’s not a full recap of the action here at Dorko’s lately, so there will be more to come!
