Happy New Year!

Posted by: | Comments (0)

right now preparations are taking place for the Notre Dame game.  but, following that we will be gearing up for tonight’s New Year’s Party.  Here’s some info:

New Year’s Eve:

I’m sure you know that sign up s have taken place over the past several weeks, and I’m glad everyone who had intentions on coming has already signed up!!!

we’ll be closed for a while this afternoon, and reopen at 9 pm.  use the poplar street side entrance.  if you fail to do so, it’ll be an easy fix.  you won’t be able to get through the door that’s locked, so use the one that’s unlocked.  :)

the band is scheduled to kick off at 10:04pm, with a 4 minute margin of error.

there will be a buffet that will not include: prime rib, lobster, pan seared scallops, linguini, veal cutlets, shrimp scampi, king crab legs, or jello.  it will include roast beef sandwiches, pork and sauerkraut, and the typical party pickables.

Kaitlyn is in charge of balloons.  Larry is in charge of nothing.  and the skittle and jolly rancher vodkas are all made and ready to go.

there is a champagne toast at midnight, and general merriment throughout the evening.  with Z at the mike, and the Cosmic Wheels rolling, if you fail to have fun it’s probably because you put some effort into it.  i say just relax and go with the flow.  i’m also expecting a performance from “biscuits squared” or is that “Biscuts times 2″?  anyway, our favorite pair of biscuts should take the stage for a few tunes to add even more smiles to the night!

SATURDAY:

pint sized bloody marys for two bucks all day, and yes I have real celery.  i plan to be there at noon to begin the football watching fun!

that’s about it.  if you need any more data, flag me down via the cell.

Sports Trivia December 2010

Posted by: | Comments (0)

During the past week we ran the December version of sports trivia.  it was, per usual, a good time with some interesting sports conversation.  good to see that Curt Susnoski made it out for a Sports Trivia night!

We ran with three teams: The “Cliff Lee” crew, Million Dollar man and IRS, and the Mad Elf crew.

there were four rounds of questions, including some sound clips, and a few “identify the pictures”.

Players worked their way through questions such as . . .

  • Who has the most 40 point games in an NBA career?
  • How many active players are there on an NFL roster?
  • Who is teh top ranked golfer in the world?
  • Who holds the record for most yards rushing in a season for the red Tornadoes? (2 players – 15 game season and 12 game season)
  • How many college bowl games are there this year?
  • What is Ted Giannoulas better known as?
  • What was the texas Rangers MLB franchise formerly known as?  And a bonus point if you can name their last manager?

going into the final round two teams were within two points of each other.  and, the final round had 30 points up for grabs.

the big question of the evening was “Name the 14 college football players that amasses 5,000 yards rushing during their college career”.

In case you’re curious, they are . . .

  • ron dayne
  • ricky williams
  • tony dorsett
  • deangelo williams
  • charles white
  • travis prentice
  • cedric benson
  • ladainian tomlinson
  • hershel walker
  • archie griffin
  • avon cobourne
  • garrett wolfe
  • mike hart
  • darren lewis

when it was over, our team whose name was inspired by Cliff Lee’s wife stod at the top of the scoreboard.  Congrats on the win fellas!!

parting tidbit:

“No matter how much you push the envelope, it’ll still be stationery.”

Recap of the Big Dog

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Last Saturday we ran the Big Dog Event.  i want to send out a big round of thanks to the shooters who made the day a great time, filled with excellent darts!

we ran two singles tournaments on the day.  the first event was the BIG DOG, the second was a half price second chance event that carried no title shot.  it was really a matter of “hey, we’re still a room full of dart shooters, and a couple of free boards. what else are we going to do, play tiddlywinks?”  so i busted out the tiddlywinks, and half way through we decieded to just go back  to shooting darts.

there were 10 shooters in the Big Dog, and with the way the brackets are drawn that means four guys have a longer road to the finals.  those guys were Nate, Hobo, Jason, and Doug.

per usual, Hobo dropped his first match of the day, landing him in what seems to be his second home – the one-loss bracket.  mind you, that’s despite posting a 45 in a losing effort.

jason made it past doug, and as a reward received the opportunity to match up against mark rohlfing.  in that match the winning scores were 49 or better.  top notch shooting.  Mark came out on top.

the tourney continued with Zig, Nate, Mark, and Frank Rakes all posting wins in the second round.  in the one-loss bracket Jason ran into Hobo, and in a match where the winning scores were 54, 50 and 46, Hobo prevailed.

The Big Dog is a tough tournament.  Jason Kroh probably drew the “long road” straw by facing the defending Big Dog in Doug Troutman in his first match.  following that up with a series against Mark Rohlfing, and finishing up with a bout vs. Red-Hot Hobo.  Jason gets the “Kirk Wimble” Award of the day.

Doug and Dennis conti met in the One-Loss bracket for a legendary match.  Leading in the top of the 9th, Doug tosses a 6 inning, finishing the game with a 47.  The count to Dennis is now 7 to tie, 8 to win.  And he hits a 7.  so now we are going to Over Time!  in the tenth Doug opens with a 7.  in the bottom of the 10th Dennis follows with a 7.  and then Dennis overtakes Doug in the 8th with an 8.  that gives us an extra-inning game with finishing scores of 62 to 55.

eventually the winner’s bracket boiled down to Frank and Mark, with mark getting the victory and the catbird seat.

Hobo advanced past Nate in the one-Loss bracket, and went on to meet Zig who had put together his own vicotry over Curtis Susnoski.  Hobo banged another 50 game and bested Zig, earning him his fourth consecutive win the One-Loss bracket.

Then, he met Frank who was fresh off of his match against Mark.  they battled through exciting games where the winners were posting 46 scores.  Hobo, King of the One-Loss bracket, prevailed.  That set up the final pairing.

Mark Rohlfing and Dave Hobowski.  The winning scores in their match were 51, 48, 51.  Two of those games were hit by Mark, who now holds the title of . . .

BIG DOG

Congrats to everyone who made the tournament possible, it was a GREAT time.  And special congrats to mark for being able to best the field and find yourself at the top of the pile when the dust settled!

That’s Mark on the left, and Dave on the Right.

the second tournament was an 8 man event, with the brackets working out beautifully.  there were some great games played, and a lot of players contiued to shoot excellent darts.  high games of the day were emerging as several shooters hit 53 games.  then Frank Rakes landed a 54 game.  then Hobo lands a 54 game.

instead of slowing down, these guys were heating up!

for the second time, the final three shoteers in the tourney were Frank Rakes, Hobo, and Mark Rohlfing.  they were having great days at the line.

and, once again Hobo and Mark were squared off. This time the Hobo went big on the scoreboard, posting a 57.  That was certainly high game of the day.  But, Mark was steady enough in his game to take the match, and the second chance tourney.

It was a great day, and I hope everyone has a wonderful Holiday Season!  The next tourney in the pipeline is the High/Low for the Fall Dart League, sometime after the New Year’s celebrations.

Mad Elf on Tap at Dorko’s

Posted by: | Comments (0)

things have been insane this past week.  one thing that happened was the joyous addition of Mad Elf to the lineup of drafts at Dorko’s Cafe in Mt. Carmel on the corners of Fourth and Poplar, 17851.  so, if you’re wondering “where to find Mad Elf on Draft”, look no further.

[photopress:troegs_beer_mad_elf_ale.jpg,full,pp_image]

we did have that sunday evening where Mr. Ryan basked in the glory of the Elf, only to find that the keg emptied.  but, no fears my friends, we have acquired another keg, and should be partying with the elf through the holidaze!
