Odyssey of the Mind® 2010 World Finals
Michigan State University
East Lansing, MI
May 26 – May 29
Students from around the world will compete in the 31st Odyssey of the Mind World Finals. This competition emphasizes creativity and teamwork. It has grown into such a huge event because OotM makes learning fun while giving kids the chance to explore their imaginations and express their creativity.
Millions of kids have been working hard all year perfecting their solutions to OotM problems and competing within their regions and states in order to advance to the 2010 World Finals. However, only the best of the best will make it to WF.
While the competition is fierce, there is also a feeling of camaraderie among competitors. Many students form life-long friendships that span the U.S. and the globe. Teams have the chance to learn about other cultures through a common goal . . . to be as creative as they can!
- NASA will be sure to provide more exciting activities for participants.
- Meeting people from different countries and cultures and making new friends worldwide.
- Seeing OMER and Dr. Sam.
- Having the satisfaction of participating in the highest level of OotM competition.
- Experiencing the other fun-filled events at WF like the Creativity Festival, International Festival, Float and Banner Parade, Coaches Competition, Opening and Awards Ceremonies, and much more!
Good Luck in Michigan!!
Flyers in the Stanley Cup Finals
Posted by: | Comments
i’m not sure if Peter Laviolette mentioned this in any of his press conferences, but due to the overwhelming support that the Philadelphia Flyers received from the fans at Dorko’s, they were able to dig deep and defeat the Montreal Candiens in the Eastern Conference finals of the NHL.

And the Race is On

On Saturday Night we had our Survivor Island gathering. The player pool is getting thinner every week, and the only way to make sure you are not asked to leave the game is to have Immunity!
and so, we issued a very important Immunity Challenge on Saturday – the remote controlled toy race car event! we took a replica of a Camero, the new ones like in Transformers, and ran it around the track a couple of times.
everyone had some test runs, and then we ran time trials. players with the top two times in time trials went on to face each other for Immunity!!
in the end Aaron took down the title for the evening . . . .

tony matt was the only player to miss sign ups, and as a result he was voted off of the island. now, he has the power that comes to those who qualify to be on the final jury. we are down to an even half dozen players now.

Flyers Night Tuesday
Posted by: | Commentsthe Fly Guys refuse to die, and we’ll be following their game on Tuesday Night on the big screen on Versus, with no juke box to interrupt the bad announcers. We’ll have a game time spread to pick on, and drink specials as well. Hopefully lots of “free slim jims!!”
Join us for the fun, and wear your Jersey or your Orange and Black!! get there early to get a seat next to this guy . . .

oh yeah, Canadiens fans are welcome too (Steve).
Z is sent home
Posted by: | Commentswell, figuratively. he’s, of course, always welcome at Dorko’s! after all, somebody’s got to win the dart trophies!
but, at Survivor on Saturday night he was the latest player to move “off the island” and become part of the jury for the event’s final vote!
the Immunity Challenge on Saturday was “Simon”, the memory machine from the 80′s. Ray K. came out on top in that contest, adding to his sizeable amount of Immunity Cards. now the “standings” look like this . . .

May Sports Trivia
Posted by: | Commentswe gathered this past thursday night for the May edition of Sports Trivia.
instead of the usual three man teams, we broke things down into two man teams. it didn’t seem to matter though because in order to win, you’d have to best the powerhouses of Tanney/Big A and Varano/Bubba. and that is a tall task!
some of the questions of the evening were . . . .
- Where did Allen Iverson play his college ball?
- Who drives the #24 NASCAR?
- Who holds the NFL record for most passing yards in a career?
- What Mt. Carmel Red Tornado was a member of the 1973 national champion Notre Dame football team?
- What is the only tennis Grand Slam event held on a clay court?
the big bonus questions that really gave teams a chance to separate themselves were . . .
- Name the 6 NFL coaches with over 200 wins and
- Name the 9 baseball players who had over 3,000 hits, and played their entire career for the same team
at the end of the night Bubba and Varano outpaced the second place team by a mere two points! so, they take the title of Sports Trivia Champions for the month of May. here’s a picture of our top dogs . . .

next month we may be changing the format a little. I’ll certainly keep you posted. in the meantime, congrats to the victors!
Making it a Habit?
Posted by: | Comments
last week at Monday Night Team Trivia we had teams sifting through questions such as . . .
- what flavor kool aid was used in the mass suicide at jonestown?
- what disease was spread in the early 1900′s by Mary Mallon’s dessert of peaches and ice cream?
- what’s the pasta name of the chef in Ratatouille?
it turns out that once again, four rounds of questions were not enough to create a “pack leader” amoung the trivia teams. in fact, THREE teams tied at the end of the night. and so we had a TIE BREAKER!!
a representative from “the college kids must be swimming in the pool clint eastwood dug” faced off with members of “the teachers need an enema” and “larry, does the carpet match the curtains?”. the question was . . .
“most satellites orbit how many miles above the earth?”
[photopress:uncleDwaynethinking.jpg,full,pp_image]
that’s not a picture of Uncle Dwayne pondering the tie breaker question. that’s him at the magic envelope pile. he puts a lot of thought behind everything on trivia night!
the team of “the college kids must be simming in the pool clint eastwood dug” won the tie-breaker, giving them a new winning streak. they had done well in the fall before going cold for weeks on end. now, it looks like they’ve regained their form!

we’ll see if they can keep it up for another week tonight!
Survivor
Posted by: | CommentsOfficial Survivor Document
Ladies and Gentlemen . . . Please excuse my absence tonight. I’m off doing foolish things in the city of brotherly love. Pray for me.
In my place I have for the offering, this “official document” detailing the rules involved in the “End Game” portion of the Saturday Night Survivor Contest. Here is what will be happenening:
First – Larry will bitch about something. Anything. It doesn’t matter what, but rest assured he will believe something is wrong and will share that opinion ad infinitum.
Second - Immunity Cards can no longer be announced after the fact. That’s been in place for a little while now, but it bears repeating. If you fail to play an Immunity Card before the final announcement of who gets voted off the island, you could end up getting voted off the island. Your Immunity will not automatically kick in after the fact to save your ass!
Third – tonight is the final Immunity Challenge that you will be able to “bank”, and use for a rainy day. We’re getting down to the nitty gritty here folks, with everyone remaining having a spot on the jury for the final council, so we need to separate the wheat from the chaff. When there are five players left, I can’t have five players claiming immunity.
Enough with the Numbers – The last chance to play an immunity card is when there are four players remaining in the game. After that, they expire. While talking to myself, I’ve been referring to this as “the problem of three players where Larry and Ray have immunity and the other guy wins the final challenge”.
I knew what the final challenge was going to be shortly after the Series began, and in this way it has meaning for everyone involved. Much like running 16-0 in the NFL will get you a bye and home field advantage in the playoffs, past glories only take you so far. ask the Patriots.
Voting People off of the Island
Obviously, if someone fails to sign in, we will be voting to remove someone from the list of players that failed to sign in.
1. If everyone signs in, we can vote after the Immunity Challenge is completed.
2. Put the name of the person you want to vote off of the island on a piece of paper.
3. Put your initials in the corner of the paper, so I know who cast that vote.
4. Toss it in the bucket.
5. Once all the votes are cast, the question is posed . . . “Does anyone want to play their Immunity Card?”
[This works out the same as playing your immunity card “in secret”, allowing people to try to vote you off, without knowing that you are immune from their villainous efforts.]
6. Whoever is not claiming immunity, and receives the most votes, is removed from the Island.
If there is a tie, anyone who voted for an Immune player revotes.
Game of the Week Rockies
Posted by: | Commentslast night we had the game of the Game of the Week rained out for the first time this season. so, everyone that made it in to see if they were going to play or not had their name tossed into the All Star Barrel with a “rain date” stamp on it. hey, every index card in the barrel is another chance to be picked during the All Star Game for the competition that will end in someone winning the prize package!
today we’ll be gathering for the afternoon game – 3:10 our time versus the Rockies. there will be a Phillies trivia question with the winner of the cap/t shirt/Phillies pint to be chosen at the end of the 7th innning! bud and bud light pints are only a buck a piece for the first two hours of the game!
never heard of Gme of the Week? – read about it here
oh – and on a complete side note – Skrully found the mask, so the line on tonight’s Flyers game just moved in favor of Philly
