Josh Mall is not a survivor

Posted by: | Comments (0)

the tribe has spoken.  and josh, you have been booted from the island.  don’t blame bower, it wasn’t his fault.  he was voting for someone else to get the boot.  something about getting rid of the stronger players first.

and so Saturday NightSurvivor turns the first corner and you can see how things are going to start to get interesting.  here’s where we stand . . .

Players With Immunity

Larry (1)

Ray (2)

Bower (1)

——————————————————

Players on the Island

zero strikes:

  • Dawn
  • Gary Kozak
  • Tony Matt
  • Lori
  • Sammy
  • Cookie
  • Ray
  • Skrully

one strike:

  • Tanney
  • Reedy
  • Aaron
  • Z
  • Larry
  • Jon Jon

two strikes:

  • bower
  • freddie
  • GREMLIN

while the prize is still in the distance, i see alliances being formed already.  and with several people sitting with two-strike counts, it looks like the island is going to be a little less populated shortly.  one thing is for sure – Immunity Helps!

and speaking of Immunity, this past Saturday’s Immunity Challenge was Wii Hula Hoop (a game that you can find on the Wii Fit disk).  It was a BLAST!

there is no way to describe what took place.  you simply had to be there.

in the end, Bower had the best hip action, errrr, let’s say he had the best Hula Hoop point scoring hip action.  here’s a pict of the fellow who earned the Immunity Card . . .

no one is really sure what the next Immunity challenge will be, but we’re sure it starts at 9pm on saturday.  sign ins start at 6:30, and voting takes place at 11!!

the Drought is Over!

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Monday we had our customary gathering for an evening of Team Trivia fun!  There was a wonderful turnout, and plenty of teams got into the action.  I like to give a big thumbs up to Audrey’s team for joining in and extend a “Welcome Back” to Jehova’s Witness Protection Program!

team name of the night might have been “Larry’s a Better Trivia Host than Hula Hoop Player”.  that’s a reference to his performance on Saturday Night during the Survivor Immunity Challenge.

here’s a quick coin flip for you . . . true or false, Bob Builder was unable to identify the following theme song during trivia . . .

while you ponder that, our players were making their way through the usual 4 rounds of 10 questions that touched everything from sports (name the elite 8 teams from this year’s NCAA men’s basketball tournament) to the periodic table.

in between, several players were able to win prize packages by naming all of the seven dwarves, and 7 of the U.S. Presidents that also served as Vice-President.

in the main trivia event, we finally had a clear cut winner at the end of four rounds.  no tie breakers this week!  the team in the back ended their drought, which began some time before the Christmas holiday.  it was a long time coming, but this week, you guys are once again the Team Trivia Champs!!!

now, we’ll see how they all fare in Thursday’s SPORTS TRIVIA CONTEST!!

That’s Right – SPORTS TRIVIA on Thursday at 7 pm!!!!

the past Saturday really was a Survivor evening.  after the G’ville parade and festivities, you had to be a Survivor to make it that far into the evening!  Still, the show goes on and the contest of the evening was the age-old game of “quarters”.

unlike the dorm room version of the game, we didn’t have beer in any glasses.  what we had were contestants sitting in front of a line of glasses.  each glass had a point value.  they also had 10 quarters.  the object was to bounce the quarters into the glasses, and rack up as many points as possible!

the winner of the contest receives an immunity card to be played at a time of their choosing.  in the end, Ray took his second immunity challenge in a row, beating Sammy Moroz in a best of seven finals.

next week sign-ins will be at the usual time (6:30), and the Immunity Challenge kicks off at 9 pm1  It will be a home shuffleboard match, so we should have a rocking good time.  and this time, i’m not announcing the challenge until that very night!

Grem – think you can keep an even keel until 6:30 on Saturday for sign ins?

the Rizza, or not the Rizza

Posted by: | Comments (0)

last night was the follow up to St. Patty’s Day trivia, and a chance for the Rizza to take down back-to-back Team Trivia titles.  of course the rest of the teams would be trying thier best to keep that from happening!

team name of the night goes to . . . “Larry Lost Two Stripes in Louisiana”.  and yes, there’s a story behind it ;)

teams made their wayy through four rounds of questions such as . . .

  • What meat traditionally becomes a Weiner Schnitzel ?
  • With 5.3 million sold since 1953, what’s by far the most successful British Car of all time?
  • What clothing item was first known as the ‘slide fastener’?

besides the questions that are actually worth points in the game, there are prize questions that must be answered from the barstool of knowledge.  last night players were vying for a prize package by trying to list all of the numbers with names that have no repeating letters.

for instance, “One” has no repeating letters.  In the word “Nine”, the letter ‘n’ repeats.  There are 16 in total, including the number “Zero”.  Good luck!

when all of that was finished, we had one lucky player choose from the magic envelope pile, where there is a $50 bill hidden, waiting for a new home!  several people found “Golden Tipped Shooters” and now have a chance at winning seats on a bus trip to a baseball game at Camden Yards this summer.

and after all of THAT, we found out that TWO teams were tied for First Place!

The Rizza and “The irresistable force meets the immovable object” . . . .

the question?  When the U.S. bought Alaska from Russia, what did we pay per acre?

as it turns out, we didn’t pay much – abut $.02 per acre.  Rad came closer with his answer during the showdown, which means that “The irresistable force meets the immovable object” came away with the Trivia Title for the evening!!  Congrats guys!

Dave Makowski – the tribe has spoken

Posted by: | Comments (0)

you have the honor of being the first persone EVER kicked off of the Dorko’s Survivor Island!!  Don’t think of it as “No One Likes You” . . . think of it as “You are a Feared Competitor!” :)

How do you keep from being tossed off of the Island?  it’s difficult.  you need to show up and sign in some time between 6:30 and 11pm on Saturday Night.  no need to purchase anything.  just be there in person and sign your name.  on second thought, it’s so simple a caveman could do it.

Dorko’s Survivor got off to a slow start in week #1, but this past Saturday was a fine showing with a thrilling Immunity Challenge!  So, I’ve decided to merge week one and two.

  • Anyone who showed up during either week has a check mark and NO Strikes against them!  You’ve got a Clean Slate!
  • Anyone who missed BOTH weeks has ONE STRIKE

BUT WAIT – I WANT TO PLAY.  IS IT TOO LATE?!?!?

You can join in on the fun starting this week, but any new players will already have ONE STRIKE against them.  (a strike is like when you don’t show up and sign the paper that night.  Three Strikes and you’re automatically out)

Week Two – IMMUNITY CHALLENGE

At 9 o’clock we ran the second Immunity Challenge.  In Week 1 Larry beat Skrully in the Connect Four Finals.  This week we shifted gears and had a . . . .

Tin Can Alley Contest

With 6 nerf bullets loaded into the clip, each contestant had six chances to knock a tin (ok, empty aluminum beer) can over.  the sharpshooter in everyone came out!

we started with a beautiful even 8 man bracket, and had to turn away several would be contestants who came after the fun started.  we’re kicking off the Immunity Challenges at 9, so whether you need immunity, or just want to join in on the fun, now you know.

the challenges are double elimination events!  so, when Ray and Lori met the first time, the loser of that match moved into the one-loss bracket.

some players took to the event and really shined.  several times players were forced to move back a foot because they both knocked over the same number of cans.  Aaron, Lori, Sammy, and Ray really had their game on!!  the matches they had were intense, and a lot of fun!  Aaron needed a run of five straight hits to catch up during one match, and he did it!

Lori almost ran the table, hitting all six cans.  unfortunately one stubborn can only slid across the table, and refused to fall!

The final match-up of the night featured a rematch between Ray and Lori, with Ray sitting on the perch in the undefeated bracket.  in front of a bar full of onlookers, Ray prevailed!! in doing so, he won a coveted Immunity Card!!

while I won’t be in the habit of announcing what the Immunity Challenges will be ahead of time, this week I’m deciding to let the cat out of the bag.  What will we be doing Saturday Night at 9pm?

Can you say “Quarters Contest” anyone?

St. Patty’s Day Trivia

Posted by: | Comments (0)

St. Patty’s Team Trivia

there was plenty of action on Monday.  Every team that played won a prize, following the holiday tradition at Team Trivia.  Of course only one team could win the big prize, possession of the Trophy for the week and the cash to commemorate victory in the event!

there were definitely plenty of questions that were based on the holiday, from recipes for irish food to the birthplace of St. Patrick.  of course people’s brains were taxed on other topics, including a question were the answer was that Shicky is a midget.

throughout the evening fun was in the air.  there was a beads conTEST for the ladies.  every man playing team trivia was given a set of beads, and the obligation to bestow that set upon one lovely lady playing the game.  when the night was done TWO visions of beauty TIED with the same amount of beads!!

during all of the fun, and that included the “pick a pop” game where the pops were actually “Leprecondums” each with their own witty saying on the packaging . . .

three “one of a kind” T Shirts that Larry had made up to commemorate the evening, and prizes going to the teams with the Best St. Patrick’s Day themed team names, there was some room for learning.  for instance, the CIA doesn’t think of England or Scotland as their own nations.  they’re part of the UK.  and according to the Catholic Church, St. Patty was born in scotland, which is part of Britan.  much the same way Pennsylvania is part of the United States.

geography questions aside, someone walked away with a one of a kind T shirt for naming 5 of the top shows on television according to the Neilson Ratings system, and someone else won a prize package by naming the State Capitals that have multiple professional sports franchises!

the shooter girls were offering jello cups, and of course the test tubes.  a couple of folks got lucky and picked the gold test tube, adding their names to the draw for a FREE PAIR of tickets on the BUS TRIP to Camdan Yards this June!!

and like every week, someone playing trivia had a chance to pick from the Magic Envelope Pile!!

meanwhile, teams were competing.  and after four rounds of questions, we still didn’t have a winner.  in fact, THREE teams were tied for the top spot, and so we went into tie-breaking mode for the second week in a row!!

but in the end, there can be only one. winner that is, and on St. Patty’s Day it was . . . .

[photopress:RizzaChampsPattys.jpg,full,pp_image]

The Rizza!!

——————————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

Funky Tut

when someone asked the winning team how they did it, i heard one of them respond that “this isn’t just a good-looking hat rack on my shoulders”.  that made me chuckle.

indeed last week at trivia there were plenty of folks out doing some big-time competition.  it kinda caught me of guard, but looking at the seemingly stacked team by the back dartboard i knew it was ON!  guys, i’m telling ya, get a girl and an old dude.  or else you’ll always have trouble with things like panty hose sizes and identifying the theme to F-Troop!

as it was, teams battled throughout the night with the game in doubt right up to the very end.  in fact, it ended in a tie after regulation!!  and so two teams sent one member each to the stage to answer the question . . .

“How many lioncloths were found in the burial chambers of King Tut?”

of course it happened to be that Vic is currently teaching Egyptian history to his students.  Unfortunately, he wasn’t concentrating on the important things like the numbers of lioncloths found in the burial chambers of the pharaohs.   Both he and Uncle Dwayne put down the same number – 10.  So, after four rounds of questions we were tied, and after one round of tie-breaking, we were tied.  that’s the first time that has happened at Team Trivia!

on the second opportunity Vic came closer to the correct answer, improving his mark in tie-breaking situations to 7 – 0.  there, i’ve put the jinx on that one :)

and so i offer a photo of the good looking hat racks, errr, I mean the winning team . . .

shuffleboard update

Posted by: | Comments (0)

i have a copy of the standings from BEFORE this past weekend’s events.  so, while they aren’t acurate to the minute, they’ll give you an idea of where things are in the Mt Carmel Shuffleboard League . . .

Dorko’s 77 – 31

Atlas Legion 57 -33

Clover Hose 70 – 47

Wilburton 64 -53

Centralia Legion 62 -55

Eagles #1 60 -57

Mt. Carmel Legion 57 -60

West End Fire Co. 51 -57

Anthracite 37 – 80

Eagles #2 25 – 83

that’s wins vs. losses.  Not every team in the league has played the same amount of games, so there is plenty of room for things to change as the season moves on!

that’s Four in a row, Skrully

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Well the starting gun sounded on the Survivor Series.  I’ll put together the “standings” chart shortly, so everyone will know who has strikes against them, and who is sitting pretty.  At stake is a three-hour party for the winner and four friends!!

No one was removed from the island on the opening night, which was the plan going in.  What we did do is have the very first “immunity challenge”.  In the end, Larry and Skrully battled wits in the classic game of Connect Four!

congrats goes out to larry as he bested the Skrully to earn One Week’s Immunity!!

This Saturday the immunity challenge will kick off at 9 pm.  Sign ins start at 6:30 (it’s shuffleboard season) and continue until 11. at that time, someone will get the boot!!

this Saturday is also HOME shuffleboard against the West End – so it’s sure to be a party!

last night was a packed house for Team Trivia!  All of the regular teams were, some with expanded rosters.  Plus, several new teams made thier way into the mix, so there was plenty of action!!

teams battled their way through four rounds of ten questions, with no one gaining a clear cut advantage.  in fact, at the end of three rounds every team in the house was within 3 points of each other.  it turns out that after Four Rounds – Four Teams were Tied for First Place!!

[photopress:trivia2_1_10tiebreaker.jpg,full,pp_image]

the all-important tie-breaking question?

How many total medals did the United States earn in all of the Winter Olympics combined?

your guess would be as good as mine, but the man who came closest to the correct answer when the heat was on was our beloved Ox.  and he brought the trophy back to the night’s champs . . . “Larry started on time for once”
