Hershey Park Happy

Posted by: | Comments (0)

that’s right, you can do it!  at least that’s what the team of “Hershey Park Security Task Force” believed when they settled in for a night of drinking, and gameplay.

after wading through a series of questions that included:

  • What two states do not recognize Daylight Savings Time
  • What federal holiday is only recognized by the employees of Washington D.C.
  • Name the 7 words that according to George Carlin cannot be said on television

all seven teams found themselves within 4 points of each other in the standings.  and, oddly enough, only one team sat at the top of those standings.  all alone, above the fray was  . . . .

congrats guys!!

SFW funnies

Posted by: | Comments (0)

these are from the email box of Rich Persing.  clean chuckles are sometimes at a premium, so i thought i’d share . . .

While I sat in the reception area of my doctor’s office, a woman rolled an elderly man in a wheelchair into the room.  As she went to the receptionist’s desk, the man sat there, alone and silent.  Just as I was thinking I should make small talk with him, a little boy slipped off his mother’s lap and walked over to the wheelchair.   Placing his hand on the man’s, he said, ‘I know how you feel.  My mom makes me ride in the stroller too’.

                                                                                * * *

As I was nursing my baby, my cousin’s six-year-old daughter, Krissy, came into the room.  Never having seen anyone breast feed before, she was intrigued and full of all kinds of questions about what I was doing. After mulling over my answers, she remarked, ‘My mom has some of those, but I don’t think she knows how to use them.’

                                                                                  * * *

Out bicycling one day with my eight-year-old granddaughter, Carolyn, I got a little wistful.  ‘In ten years,’ I said, ‘you’ll want to be with your friends and you won’t go walking, biking, and swimming with me like you do now.  Carolyn shrugged.  ‘In ten years, you’ll be too old to do all those things anyway.’

                                                                                  * * *

Working as a pediatric nurse, I had the difficult assignment of giving immunization shots to children.  One day I entered the examining room to give four-year-old Lizzie her needle. ‘No, no, no!’ she screamed. ‘Lizzie,’ scolded her mother, ‘that’s not polite behavior.’ With that, the girl yelled even louder, ‘No, thank you! No, thank you!

Double Dose

Monday was Team Trivia, and last night was the July running of Sports Trivia, so there’s much to report on!

Tuesday, once the dust was cleared from Monday’s Trivia party, Skrully noted that his team had fallen short by a single point.  If they knew that Cerulean was a shade of blue, they’d have closed that gap.  but, in what seems to be an odd note lately, there was only one team atop the scoreboard when the night closed.

but, before the evening ended, everyone playing had a chance to decipher the following sequence, known as “Conway’s Sequence”.

could you give the next number in the sequence?

1

11

21

1211

111211

311221

????

these two sharp minds managed to put pencil to paper and list the next two numbers . . .

unfortunately i only had one T shirt to award, so we needed a tie breaking question.  Mrs. Demanski came closer to the year of Mozart’s birth, and took home the commemorative T-shirt.

my favorite question for the evening was “Name the original 7 cast members of Saturday Night Live, also known as the not-ready-for-prime-time players”.

as far as the group effort goes, Multiple Scoregasms finished in the lead.

[photopress:multipleScoregasmsII.jpg,full,pp_image]

congrats on outpacing the other NINE trivia teams.

SPORTS TRIVIA – i’m amazed at how much these guys know about sports.  it seems i might have to crank things up a notch in order to really separate the men from the boys during the sports trivia events as everyone involved seems to have a very strong grip on most sports info!!

last night players arrived, teams were formed, and battle was done.  despite everyone’s best efforts, no one could stop the sports trivia machine that is Big A – Varano – Tanney.  in fact, here’s a snapshot of our champs!

[photopress:back2backSportsTrivia.jpg,full,pp_image]

our lads can reign as STC (sports, trivia, champs) for another month, but beware that everyone will be gunning for you in the August sports trivia contest!

Wii Tennis – the world of Wii was shaken slightly when Tanney called out our Hall of Fame Wii Tennis Champion – Jason Bower – to an exhibition match.  Tanney roundly whooped Bower’s butt.  was bower sucking him in, giving him false hope?  or is Tanney destined to rise quickly through the ranks and take a seat as a Hall of Famer?  only time will tell!

Pub Darts – hey guys, i won’t be able to participate in tonight’s traditional thursday night pub dart gathering.  (oddly, i hear no sighs of relief?!?!?)  but, there IS a tournament this Saturday at the Silver Bullet.  traditional SB times of 12:30 sign in and 1pm darts in the air.

Nicky’s Team

Posted by: | Comments (0)

you don’t need a creative name to make a powerful showing.  Nicky’s Team proved that this past monday night during the TeamTrivia event.

throughout the evening contestants were peppered with questions such as . . .

  • who was the last team to win the world series in their first appearance?
  • captain crunch’s flagship is named for what fish?
  • name the four teletubbies
  • what was the name of the jolly green giant’s sidekick?
  • write S.O.S. in morse code

at the end of the four rounds of trivia, three teams found themselves tied for the lead.  and that means . . . SUDDEN DEATH!!!

[photopress:7_16_9suddenDeath.jpg,full,pp_image]

the question at hand was “in the movie rocky, how much was rocky paid to fight apollo creed?”  obviously it was quite the thought provoking question!

in the end, Vic came closest to the actual answer (which was $150,000) and that gave his team the title for the week!  congratulations to Nicky’s Team!!

yes, sooner or later we’ll get a picture of builder with his eyes open.

SPORTS TRIVIA – is happening for the month of JULY on this WEDNESDAY!!  varano, demanski, and tanney will be trying to defend thier title.  remember that sports trivia teams are limited to 3 players per team, and that we start a little earlier – 7:30pm.

the pub darts contest

Posted by: | Comments (0)

saturday we took things down a slightly different road, and had a gathering of dart shooters.  only this time, the boards were English, and the partners were random draw.

it’s not the first time we’ve done this, but this time we had a troup of dart shooters from Dorko’s that were capable of putting together a solid Engilsh darting performance – and they all made it in time for the 1pm roll call.

as pills were picked, and names were paired together, it was obvious that we’d be having an interesting contest.  throughout the day, teams advanced by a single dart, or were eliminated by as slim a margin.  in the end, two teams of heavyweights paired off in the finals.

after having come through the loser’s bracket, the team of Ed/Skinner managed to hand the team “on the perch” (Kirk/Nate) their first loss – setting up a winner take all final set of three games.

it turned out to be a final series where the teams split the first two games.  so before you knew it, the first part of the day’s events had boiled down into one winner-take-all game.  and at the end of that battle, it was Ed and Skinner who managed to take the stage and receive the rewards of victory.

any team that comes out of the loser’s bracket will tell you that anything’s possible, but taking two sets in a row from the team on the perch is honestly a daunting task.  congrats to the afternoon’s victors!!

soon after that tournament concluded, the second half of the day’s events kicked into gear.  almost all of the same faces competed a second time in the same format.  and this time, Ed and Kirk met in the finals again.  only in round two Kirk’s team managed to take down the final game, and win the second tournament.

overall, it was a day filled with exciting darts, and great cheer.  a hearty round of congratulations goes out to all involved!!

SHOUT OUT – special appreciation goes to Brokey and Z for taking down their game against Bob (ahem, that’s me) and Doug.  I told the clown about it, and i’m sure he’ll mention it when we see him again, but he’s been wrapped up in his own space for a while.  I think it’s girl problems honestly.

My Parents Still Think I’m a Virgin

Posted by: | Comments (0)

but before i get into that, here’s a recap of Monday Night’s Team Trivia affair . . . .

Folks sure made it out last night, with plenty of teams competing for all sorts of prizes, the night was destined to be special.  the super-awesome shooter girls did a great job before they could relax and kick down a few brews.  thanks for spreading the cheer, party on ladies!!

of course every team wants to take command of the Trivia Trophy and have their time as Champions of the Week.  but, Monday was special as we continued celebrating the Fourth of July.  teams were wrestiling with patriotic questions like . . .

  • what PA town was daniel boone born in? (answer later in the post, for anyone too “time pressed” to look it up :) )
  • who wrote the Star Spangled Banner?
  • According to the song, where was Yankee Doodle going on his pony?

teams were really battilng this one out, with several teams tied for the lead at the end of regulation, and a few more that were one point off the pace.  if only someone on the defending Champs had known . . . .

what is a “a type of firework, the name of a mixed drink, and a John Cougar Mellencamp song”.  still, at the end of regulation, three teams were tied in the biggest Trivia conTEST of the summer!!

but before the potential winners could do battle, we handed out the prizes – at least one to every team!  Double A Ron was ready to put his prize into play the moment he got his hands on it!

[photopress:fromThreePointLand.jpg,full,pp_image]

but the basketballs, camp chairs, beer pong sets, etc. were not what people really had their eye on.  tonight was the night that some lucky person would take home the gas grill.  and . . . Varano’s team picked the flag that said “GAS GRILL” on it.  well, actually it was colored gold on the bottom, but it meant the same thing. someone on their team was taking home the grill.  now, to the task of deciding whom.

since the grill was a “No Questions Asked” prize, we had to dig deep, and pull out a timeless classic.  everyone from the chosen team would do battle in the time-tested game of “BUZZ”.

for those of you who aren’t from around here, here’s how it works:

  • Buzz is a count off/substitution game.
  • players count off, and substitute any number containing “7″ as one of the digits with the word BUZZ.
  • you also substitute any “double number” (11, 22, 33, etc.) with the word BUZZ.

simple, no?

you might be surprised how easy it is to slip up.  and in the end, the man who failed to fail was Mr. “Trivia Machine” Demanski.  this happy couple should have some serious grilling/partying in store for some time to come!!

besides the team prizes, we also had a “beads contest” running throughout the night.  in the end, the lady who collected the most beads from the fellows in the room was awarded a prize.  in typical fashion, the prize was a themed beer cooler.  er, beverage cooler.

Congratulations to Dawn Dormer for collecting more beads than any other lady in the room, and winning both the title and the prize!

meanwhile, back on the ranch, we still didn’t have a winning team!!  in fact, three teams tied for the top spot.  they each sent one represntative to the table to compete in a sudden death overtime.  the question . . . . write the number 1776 in Roman Numerals.

it doesn’t look like Shawn Ryan fears Skrully’s skills in the field of Roman Numerals. . . .

after attempts by each player, it turned out that no one had written down the correct answer – MDCCLXXVI.  i didn’t know it at the time, but apparently it’s written under the pyramid on the back of the one dollar bill.  never noticed that before.

so – on to DOUBLE OVERTIME!!

new representatives were put forth by both teams for a final “sports, or more specifically, golf” question.

“How Many Dimples are there on a standard Golf Ball?”

My Parents Think I’m a Virgin came closer than Cookie Signed the Declaration of Independance with their guess, and WON THE TITLE!!!!

Way to go guys!!!

P.S. – Daniel boone was born in Reading, PA

Today is the DAY

Posted by: | Comments (0)

that’s right, tonight is the special Fourth of July version of Team Trivia!!  And, apparently Sammy is bringing the big orange truck just in case he wins the big prize, this gas grill . . .

EVERY team that plays tonight wins a prize, and some lucky player takes home the grill.   and NO – you DO NOT need to be on the winning team to take home the big prize.  it’s random luck in action, so whether you’ve got all your presidential history down pat or not, you’ve got an equal chance to win any of the prizes.

Everyone will be looking to knock off these characters . . . .

[photopress:backToTheCorner_1_2.jpg,full,pp_image]

they’re last week’s winners.  after having been close for several weeks in a row, they managed to hold on to the very end and take down the title.  Congratulations guys!!

for anyone who hasn’t been to a Monday Night Team Trivia event, it STARTS AT 8PM.  tony matt will show up at 8:21, but we’ll already be firing out the questions by then. :)

there are Four Rounds of 10 questions each.  the last question in each round is a “bonus question” and has multiple answers, and you’ll get one point for each correct answer.  at the end of the night the team with the most points wins.  it’s that simple.  yay!

and even though it is officially a conTEST, the entire evening is filled with merriment and revelry of all kinds.  so, come on out and celebrate the Fourth, grabs some hot wings, and enjoy a $1 Yeungling Lager while playing Team Trivia!!
